A Few Car Buying Tips

By: Art Gib

Transportation is a necessary part of life, and while many cities in New Jersey offer public transportation, it's more common for a person to simply buy their own vehicle to ensure they have an affordable way to get around whenever they need it. Of course, buying a car is a big step, especially if you have never done it before. So, here are a couple of things you will want to do before you buy a car.

The first thing you need to do is determine what you need in a vehicle. Do you want something small with good gas mileage or does it just need to have four wheels and a running engine? Maybe you even need a specific kind of vehicle like a truck for your job. These things need to be taken into consideration before you even begin looking because they will help you determine the make and model best suited to your needs. Also, most cars have additional features. Some are standard and some are not. Make sure you know which features you want because this will affect the price.

Your next step is to do some research. Head online and search for the average price on the make, model, and year you are considering. You will also want to pull a blue book price as well. This research will give you some idea of what you should be paying. After finding the average price start looking for reviews on the vehicle. Usually you can find both good and bad reviews. If you see any recurring problems mentioned in the negative reviews, make sure you talk to your dealer about them.

After doing your research you can head over to the dealer who specializes in your vehicle. For example, if you are looking for a Volkswagen, find a few NJ VW dealers and start your search for a vehicle there. Come prepared with a list of any questions or concerns you may have about your potential vehicle, and ask the dealer about them. If you feel he isn't listening or is trying to push you into a car you're not ready for, than ask to speak with a new salesman. Remember, you are the customer. The salesman is there to serve you, not the other way around.

If you follow the tips mentioned above you will give yourself all of the information you need to know about the car you want. This is helpful because you can let the dealer know exactly what you are looking for, saving both of you time. Of course, if you'd prefer not to deal with a salesman you may be able to find your car online. Whatever you choose, the most important part of buying any vehicle is the research you do prior to finding that vehicle. A knowledgeable consumer is the best consumer.
