A Guide To Search Engine Optimisation

By: Dominic Donaldson

So you have a company and a product for sale that no other company sells. You purchase a website that is well made and looks very professional. So in theory you should start making money right? It is that simple isn't it? Well, it's not actually that simple really as although you may have a good product on sale and a good website you need exposure online so that people can find your website. The best route in order to gain this exposure is through search engine optimisation or SEO.

Search engine optimisation is the process of enhancing your website's online profile by ensuring that the traffic you have that goes to your website is doing fairness to the product that you are selling online.SEO will raise your profile on the internet through search engine websites such as Google. Most potential customers will search for products through search engines and the engine will present them with a list of websites and pages that are relevant to their search.

These search results can be in their thousands to millions when they appear and when a potential customer looks at the results they are more than likely to click on the first couple that appear to them. It is unlikely a customer is going to search beyond the first page as what they need has probably been presented in the first page. Therefore, it is imperative that your website appears in the top list, as this will ensure traffic to your site and is what search engine optimisation aims to achieve.

SEO works by providing search engines with the applicable information that they are looking for. By giving the search engine what it wants it makes the website far more interesting and the position of the website will move up the results page. Search engines work by employing software called spiders which search the web for information. With this information search engines like Google then make search results and lists. The spiders look for HTML coding in the site so SEO can enhance the website with the coding, making the most of the HTML.

Search engine optimisation is at its best when a website is being first created but is definitely not critical in being able to enhance your site. Any website can be edited with SEO techniques in order to improve the traffic and position of the website. One of these techniques is the language used on the site, the keywords and phrases. The more certain keywords are used the more it will have an effect on a search, search engine optimisation researches these words and then includes them within the HTML of the website. When the software finds the popular words in the coding to the site the website is then given preferential treatment over websites that haven't. This is how your website can move up in the search results and make you available to all your customers.
