The Indian Tabla is a drum similar to, but also somehow different to the drums we are used to. You have probably already seen a drum set. If not, music videos of bands that we see on television have probably taken care of this problem. When we see a musical instrument that is very popularly used in the music industry today, like the drums, we tend to fail to wonder if there are other types than the one we are used to seeing and watching. But alas, there is other types of drums than that we so commonly see nowadays. In fact, some of these other drums are associated with a country that had somehow made it popular or where it originates from. An example of this is the Indian drum. Getting acquainted with the Tabla You might be intrigued by how it is named, but the word really just simply means drum. It comes from the Arabic word tabla for drum. It is a percussion instrument that is more popularly associated with India because it has always been used in the classical, religious and other types of music of the country. Like all kinds of percussion musical instruments, this produces sound when you strike an object towards it. But unlike the typical drums that we usually see today, this percussion instrument is more of a hand drum, which means many prefer to produce music from it by using their hands to strike it. This instrument features two kinds of drums, each with a different size and pitch from the other. The smaller of the two drums is called dayan. It is made to produce treble sounds, which means that it has the higher range or the higher pitch of the two drums. The other is bigger than the dayan, and is called the bayan. If the dayan produces the high pitches when struck, the bayan produces the bass notes, or those sounds that are low in pitch. When you try to think about it, the two drums of this Indian musical instrument are made to be complete opposites. The size of one is big; the other is small. The dayan can produce the highest pitch in the musical range; the bayan can produce the lowest. The former is usually made of wood, while the latter is made of metals like brass or copper. In India, it is the most popular percussion instrument. And indeed, it comes as o surprise, for it can create lovely jazz or blues music. When I see these drums, I am also reminded of reggae music, for they have the look that most people would associate with reggae. A look into its history Like all musical instruments, this musical tool must have come from someplace and from someone. There are debates on its history, and until know there are still uncertainties in pinpointing just how and where it started. All that is known is that it became known in India during the 17th and 18th century, and that it was further popularized by Siddhar Khan Dhaadhi, an Indian musician who mastered the instrument. When you look at this musical tool, you might get the idea that it is easy to learn it. However, its image is deceptive, for it can take some time before you get the hang of experimenting with what sounds are appropriate for your kind of music. But if you are a passionate percussionist and you love music like jazz and blues, the Indian Tabla could be perfect for you.
