Another Car Bites The Dust

By: Tony Hill

Another car has hit the end of the production line and come to a bitter end. The Vauxhall Vectra has been killed off and has already been replaced by the Vauxhall Insignia.

The Vectra was first introduced to the market in 1988, however it was sold under the 'Cavalier' name in the UK - it was traded under the Vectra name in 1995 so enjoyed a fairly impressive run of 13 years.

Poor sales eventually led to production being cut - although at one stage the Vectra proved to be good competition for the like of the Ford Mondeo. The Vectra C (which ran 2002-2008) only managed to come higher than 10th once in the best-selling UK car lists whilst the Vectra A managed to get to the 4th spot. The figures obviously pointed to the fact that the Vectra was slowly losing its popularity. The Vectra did enjoy some success during its reign however - when it outsold the Ford Mondeo for the first time during 1999.

For the price - around 12,000 GBP - the Vectra more or less gave you what you paid for. The problem is people often want more than what they paid for. The Vectra offered you a comfortable drive and was therefore ideal for long journeys. The performance was reasonable and the looks were ok - but just ok, and perhaps this was the issue. Numerous reviews cited 'bland looks' as the Vectra's downfall and maybe this is why Vauxhall felt the need to replace it with the new Insignia.

So what makes the new Vauxhall Insignia a better option?

Well, for starters it does look better - it has more character, it's more dynamic and stylish - and therefore looks completely different to the Vectra. The Insignia was also recently named European Car of the Year 2008, beating the Ford Fiesta which is no easy feat considering the success the Fiesta has enjoyed over the past year.

The Insignia is also equipped with more technology such as climate control and the top spec models include Sat Nav, and electrically operated rear windows. The Insignia SRi is fitted with loads of sports features such as sports suspension, sports front seats, 18" alloy wheels and a sports steering wheel.

The Insignia also achieved a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating and is therefore fitted with the latest safety equipment.

Overall the new Vauxhall Insignia seems really good value for money and time will tell if it manages to be more popular than the Vectra. If you didn't see the problem with the Vectra then there are still plenty available to buy second-hand!
