Are You Missing A Big (Free) Internet Marketing Opportunity?

By: Deborah Gallant

The most overlooked and simple Internet marketing tool is simple email. Yes email. All those messages you send to your poker buddies, your middle school bake sale list, your neighborhood watch.

Many audiences yawn when I insist on discussing email as part of my Internet Marketing presentation. Email? Who wants advice on email? Everyone has been emailing for years and thinks they know everything they need to know already.

But stop and think about it. In fact, you probably touch more people with your email communications on a daily basis than you do with your website. Think of every outbound email as a potential marketing touch.

Every email message you send out should:

1. Be from your professional domain: like john@johndoeinc.com.

When you send out messages from johndoe@youremailprovider, every email promotes your Internet Service Provider (like AOL or Earthlink) instead of you and your business. Once your have registered a domain for your business, you MUST use it for each and every email related to your business. (And you never know what networking you might get going when you use it for your personal correspondence, too!) Switching
people over to your new email address isn't as hard as you think it is.

2. Have a positive point of view, be written in full sentences with punctuation and a sign-off.

Unless you are in the middle of an online conversation and "yes" or "no" will suffice, spend the extra moment to make every communication coherent. Frequently your emails will travel beyond the intended recipient and you want to look "good" across the board.

3. Have a signature file at the end of each and every business email communication.
It should contain (at a minimum):

* Your full name
* Your phone number (you want them to call, right?)
* Your email address
* Your domain
* Your business name & tagline
* Add a copy blurb and/or logo if you like

If you use Microsoft Outlook or Entourage on a Mac, you'll find it is relatively simple to set up a signature file.

Back in the olden days of marketing, they used to say it takes seven marketing contacts(or touches) to make an impact, but now in this age of hyper-saturation of media, they say it takes 11 touches to break through the clutter. Email is a simple way to connect and drive traffic and interest to your business.
