Before Buying Used, Check Out A Car's History

By: Art Gib

When purchasing a used car, you really are put in a position of having to trust that the auto's history is indeed what it is made out to be. But buyers do have a self-protective option: here's why you should run a history check on that used car.

First of all, if you want to increase the likelihood that you will have a good used car buying experience, then buy from a dealership rather than from a private property. Most reputable dealerships have already checked out the vehicle's history and will back up the preowned cars they sell with some kind of guarantee. You will not get that kind of protection when you buy from an individual.

If you do choose to purchase your car from a private party, here's why you should conduct a history check:

-- A check can let you know if the car has been rebuilt. Very often, sellers will try to pass off a used vehicle as being in its original condition. Unless it's a classic car, why take the chance on purchasing one that has been through a serious wreck, flood, fire, or junkyard? It's too iffy, and there's no need to settle for such a car since there are so many other better choices out there. See if there's a salvage title attached to the automobile and then be wary.

Doing a title search can give you a whole lot of other valuable information:

-- It can let you know if the mileage showing on the car's odometer is accurate or not. If the mileage has been rolled back at some point, there is a very good likelihood that the search will alert you to that fact.

-- If an individual tells you she is the original owner of the vehicle, a title search will let you know right away if that is true or not. It can tell you how many owners the car has had, including the dates of ownership for each one. It can also provide information about whether the car was leased, ever used as a rental vehicle, a fleet car, or a government vehicle.

-- Doing a search can also help you to haggle for a price if you are purchasing from a dealership in that it will let you know when the seller took possession. If it's been sitting around the lot for quite a while, you will be in a much better position to negotiate a better deal for yourself.

With the ready availability of title searches, there really is no excuse for used car buyers to purchase a vehicle without knowing as much about it as possible. It's worth it!
