Ben Harper Tickets - Ben Harper Unveils New Band and New Album

By: Brent Warnken

Although White Lies For Dark Times, due May 5, is really his tenth studio album, as far as singer, songwriter and guitarist Ben Harper is concerned it may as well be his "second first record." Which would be his second debut, if that exists, right? Either way, the album marks the debut of Harper's new band, Relentless7. Harper met the trio of Texans through guitarist Jason Mozersky (formerly of the band Wan Santo Condo) during the 1998 H.O.R.D.E. Tour and they recorded "Serve Your Soul" for his 2006 double album Both Sides of the Gun. Although Harper told Billboard.com, "that's when I knew there was gonna be chemistry with this band and something that needed to be flushed out," he didn't officially pair with Relentless7 until last summer, after shelving his other band, the Innocent Criminals (with whom he recorded 2007's Lifeline).

Although critics are saying Harper has "gone rock" on his upcoming White Lies For Dark Times, he scoffed, "I've always been rock, let's not kid ourselves," in response. Harper unveiled Relentless7 at this year's South By Southwest and the band has appearances set for Last Call with Carson Daily (March 27), The Late Show with David Letterman (May 6), Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (May 7) and Jimmy Kimmel Live (May 21). Ben Harper and Relentless7 will also kick off an eight-week tour beginning at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival April 30. The jaunt includes a June 13 stop at the Bonnaroo Music Festival so check online for Ben Harper tickets to see Harper and Relentless7.

Ben Harper has been attracting crowds since the early '90s, as the California native signed with Virgin Records in 1992 and released his solo debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World, that same year. The politically charged Fight for You Mind, Harper's sophomore album, arrived three years later and promptly went gold. Harper went on tour in support of his sophomore set, securing fans in his wake, and recorded his third album, Will to Live, while on the road. The album served as Harper's mainstream breakthrough but instead of forging on solo, he assembled the Innocent Criminals, comprised of Juan Nelson (bass), Dean Butterworth (drums) and David Leach (percussions). With the band in tow, Harper released Burn to Shine in 1999; the album yielded radio hit "Suzie Blue" and classic track "Steal My Kisses."

After the live double-disc Live from Mars came down for landing in 2001, Harper released the gritty gem Diamonds on the Inside, which spawned the rock ballad "With My Own Two Hands," in 2003. Been Harper continued to alternative between solo albums and releases with the Innocent Criminals in subsequent years and remains one of the most sought-after rockers to see live.
