Coldplay Tickets - Coldplay Plays Sydney Sound Relief Show

By: Brent Warnken

It may have been pouring rain during the Sound Relief show in Sydney on March 14, but you wouldn't have known it judging by the performance from the first act of the day, Coldplay. The British band probably hasn't been a mere opener for some time, as they are currently one of the reigning rock bands in the world, but they played the first set at Sydney Cricket Ground with ample enthusiasm. Chris Martin & Co. were originally slated to play an acoustic set so as to avoid difficulty in setting up their concert at the Sydney Acer Arena later that evening, but the band brought the full backline nonetheless. Coldplay took the stage at 13:30 pm and performed "Life in Technicolour" and "Yellow," with the steadily expanding crowd holding large balloons filled with yellow ticket-tape. Martin told the audience: "We thought, what can we do to impress someone from row one to row 5,000," before performing John Farnham's "You're the Voice." Then the week's rumors were confirmed when Farnham took the mic along with Coldplay. "Fix You" appropriately closed Coldplay's set, as the concert was devoted towards raising funds for victims of the Victorian bushfires and Queensland floods.

Before they were filling arenas around the globe, Coldplay was just another U.K. band rising the ranks and gaining comparisons to Radiohead. The band first caught the attention of the music industry with "Yellow," the lead single off their 2000 debut album Parachutes and one of their most famous pop-rock ballads. The album eventually went platinum and garnered Coldplay their first Grammy award. Two years later the band released their sophomore album, A Rush of Cold Blood to the Head, which earned then two more Grammys and yielded a string of hit singles like "The Scientist," "In My Place" and "Clocks." After embarking on a world tour, Coldplay issued the CD/DVD package Live 2003 which chronicled their worldly jaunt in support of A Rush of Cold Blood to the Head.

After "Speed of Sound" quickly climbed the charts in 2005, Coldplay released their third album, X&Y, that summer and secured even more success. Instead of using longtime producer Ken Nelson, Coldplay worked with Danton Supple (known for his work with Morrissey and The Cure) on X&Y, although they stepped into the studio with Brian Eno to begin work on their next effort. Eno, who lend his talent to U2's Joshua Tree and multiple Radio head albums, helmed Coldplay's most recent effort, 2008's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. The band racked up no less than seven Grammy nominations, sold nearly seven million copies and earned the top spot on the charts in 17 different countries!

Coldplay is currently at work on their next effort with Eno in a West London Studio, although frontman Chris Martin has been working in a different studio at the suggestion of Eno, separate from the rest of the band, John Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion.
