Unless you're very thorough when it comes to cleaning your computer, try these two little experiments. The first experiment is this: carefully turn your computer keyboard upside down, so that the keys are facing your desktop, and then shake your keyboard vigorously - perhaps even lightly tapping the bottom of it. Now have a look at your desktop. The chances are you will be appalled at the mountain of dust, debris, crumbs, nail clippings and other assorted items of rubbish that have spilled out from between the keys. And remember, since the keys are hollow, the stuff on your desk is only the small amount of rubbish that managed to escape. However, don't worry too much - you're in good company. At least eight out of ten keyboards will produce a similar heap of dead skin and crumbs if inverted and shaken. The second experiment may be slightly less disgusting, but nonetheless, quite revealing. Turn your monitor off, but continue to have a good look at it. Again, you may be appalled at the sudden realization of just how many greasy blobs, fingerprints and other grimy marks have appeared on your screen. These two experiments simply reveal the natural build up of grime, grease and debris which is to be expected at any computer workstation. But apart from being rather disgusting, both of these aspects reveal a risk when it comes to health. Naturally, the keyboard looks the most disgusting. But remember this - everyone in your house may well touch the same keys, over and over again. In fact, in many households the computer keyboard is the most touched item - meaning it is the most continuously touched, and frequently touched object. Naturally this means that every germ, every unhygienic bit of dirt, and every crumb that could moulder away for weeks is sitting right by your fingers every day, ready to attach themselves to your hands, allowing you to spread those germs wherever you go. Have you ever used the computer, then gone to make food? Now imagine all that filth beneath your fingertips becoming embedded in your food. Unpleasant isn't it? This is one of the reasons that cleaning your keyboard thoroughly is important. There are three ways to do this. Of course, the exercise you've just done is a start, but using a keyboard wipe, preferably an antibacterial one, is a good start. Also, using compressed air to quickly blast deep between the keys is another excellent way. As far as your monitor is concerned, you may consider that there is no direct health risk here, and whilst germs are not to blame, there is nonetheless a risk to your health. If you find yourself staring at your monitor, and often finding it uncomfortable or resulting in headaches, it may be that you are focussing on the dirty marks on the screen, without even being aware of it. Your brain will subconsciously focus on the dirty marks on the screen, then on the data itself, and back again - causing headaches. Keeping your screen clean will help to reduce eye fatigue and headaches.
