I have been trying to update my car-enthusiast father's interest in technology for a long time; his stubbornness to not join 2009 is impressive at the least. My father is so stubborn he refuses to buy CDs, preferring only tapes claiming they 'are more than good enough'. Of course, tapes now being obsolete he can only find new ones at jumble sales and second hand stores. He cannot seem to grasp the concept of digitally recorded music and don't even ask him about ITunes. He seems to think the whole world is against him and that as long as he has his trusty Volvo accessories such as his layered car jacket he and his car he will be alright. Recently his stubbornness seems to have grown, every time he sees me on my mobile phone or my MP3 player he makes a big point of rolling his eyes and muttering something I can't hear about how things just aren't made like they used to be. I guess I thought he was never going to be updated into the here and now, but due a little accident recently, he and his trusty Volvo have both had to undergo an update. It all started the other day when my father was left to babysit my sister's toddler son, George. George soon grew tired of my father's entertainment, which was nothing really apart from sitting in the greenhouse watching my father moan as he watered his various plants and seedlings. George decided to go on a small adventure and knocking aside some of father's Volvo accessories and Porsche models he'd been left to play with, he found the tape collection. Amusing himself, George began to unravel the tapes he found in the lounge, good bye Neil Young, good bye The Eagles and good bye Nancy Sinatra. As I returned home I could see through into the lounge that there was a black mass of what looked like seaweed curling onto the carpet and there was George in the middle of this mess, pulling out a lifetime's collection of music in thick dark tendrils. I could see my father pacing from side to side, unable to believe his eyes. So I guess I knew what present would cheer up my father, I went and purchased him an IPod deck to slide into his car. The tape player was looking a bit ancient now and I thought the Volvo would appreciate some Volvo accessories to update it a little. What a result! My father has now fully embraced his car's update and can appreciate the benefits of an MP3 Player quite happily. Even George hasn't worked out how to interfere with it!
