Fleetwood Mac brought blues-rock to eager listeners' ears during the 1960s and 1970s at a time when other blues-rock bands were also all the rage (see Stones, The Rolling). Their roots formed in the legendary 1960s blues outfit the Bluesbreakers. Bassist John McVie, guitarist Peter Green and drummer Mick Fleetwood broke away to form their own group now known as Fleetwood Mac. Over the years, the band grew and changed its lineup. Consistently, though, both Mick Fleetwood and John McVie stayed at the helm over decades of singing and songwriting. Fleetwood Mac made their big entrance to the music scene in 1968 with their eponymous debut. It was a wild success in the U.K. spending a good deal of time in the Top Ten, but at the same time failing to impress listeners in the United States. In a matter of a few years, their luck would change across the ocean, with many thanks to skilled vocal abilities of Stevie Nicks and the songwriting ingenuity of Lindsey Buckingham. The band released their self-titled debut in the U.S. in 1975, and it started to climb the charts, eventually reaching the coveted number one spot thanks to the massive success of singles like "Over My Head," "Rihannon" and "Say You Love Me." Eventually the record would go onto sell over five million copies in the U.S. alone. While the bandmembers underwent a series of personal problems and lasting disagreements, their next album, Rumours, became a huge success upon its release in the spring of 1977. It generated Top Ten singles in the songs "Go Your Own Way," "Dreams," "Don't Stop" and "You Make Loving Fun." It went onto sell an impressive 17 million copies in the U.S. and became the second best selling album of all time. They followed with an intense tour and immediately retreated to the recording studio to create material for their highly anticipated follow-up album. And while it didn't generate as much success as Rumours, Tusk did go multi-platinum and created the Top Ten Singles: "Sara" and "Tusk." It was during this time that each of the band members started finding their own way in the music world and each concentrated on making their own solo albums. 15 years passed before Fleetwood Mac would return to the studio and emerge with Say You Will in 2003. Now prospects for the band seem to be looking brighter. Catch them live on their upcoming tour!
