Gaelic Storm Tickets - From Titanic Steerage to Chart Success

By: Brent Warnken

Gaelic Storm is an Irish American band based out of Santa Monica, California, that became famous when they appeared briefly in the movie Titanic. The group, consists of vocalist/accordionist Patrick Murphy, bodhran player Steve Wehmeyer, guitarist/mandolinist Steve Twigger and fiddler Samantha Hunt. And djembe player Shep Lonsdale had only been around for a short time before they made their appearance in the film. To movie-goers everywhere they will always be remembered as the group that got Kate Winslet and Leondardo DiCaprio dancing in the steerage in wildly popular 1997 film.

The group began to grow in fame after the film, and soon found themselves touring relentlessly in order to spread their name further. In 1998 they released their self-titled debut album on July 28, proving that they were more than just a cameo appearance in a hit film. The toe-tapping set of traditional Irish songs included the "The Hills of Connemara," "Bonny Ship The Diamond/Tamlinn," "The Rocky Road to Dublin/Kid on the Mountain," "Sammy's Fancy," "Sight of Land" and "The Road to Liskeard." It also had the song "The Storm" on it, a title written by band members Twigger and Lonsdale.

Their second chart album was Herding Cats, an album that balanced songs between traditional and band-written. Many of those written by band members were by Twigger or Twigger and Wehmeyer. The traditional songs from the album were "South Australia," "Spanish Lady," "Barnyards of Delgaty," and "Titanic Set." The album found chart success at number 12 on Top World Music Albums.

Herding Cats was followed up by the Top World number two album Tree and another number two titled Special Reserve. A top music number three followed in 2004 with the album How are We Getting Home? And the group continued to prove themselves by building credibility on the exposure that Titanic was able to give them, and making sure that their fame stuck.

One of Gaelic Storm's most important chart albums so far has been Bring Yer Wellies, willies begin a kind of rubber boot worn in the rain and when working or walking out of doors in the UK. The album reached 31 on Top Heatseekers and Top Independent albums and number two on Top World Music Albums. It was released July 25, 2006. Most recently they released What's the Rumpus on July 8, 2008. The album found chart success at number one on Top World Music and number 13 on Top Heatseekers.

What's the Rumpus? is an album of 14 entertaining tracks, such as the number seven song "Don't let the Truth Get in The Way (Of a Good Story)" with the chorus: "Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story/No harm no foul no crime/Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story/It'll get 'em every time.
