I write this literally hours before Mr. Barrack Obama is about to be inaugurated as the next president of the Untied States of America. The question is how important is freedom of speech and does it really exist in today's world. Thomas Jefferson wrote all men are created equal and as far as rights and freedom of speech are concerned I whole heartedly agree. I am very concerned this isn't the case in today's world however. Do we really have complete freedom of speech? I would like to cite two examples first were the Dixie Chicks a very popular country music act that in the wake the implementation of the Iraq war their lead singer uttered the words "I am embarrassed the president of the United States is from America." What happened next was nothing short of shocking! The airwaves were littered with people that were angry at the Dixie Chicks and it even went as far as people staging public CD burning events. People actually burnt their Dixie Chick CD's, wow! The sad part is since then Mr. Bush has become the most unpopular president of all time and I am sure those people are regretting having burnt perfectly good music that will last for generations! The next example I discovered after watching the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. This is a documentary by Ben Stein, made famous in the movie Ferris Bueller and Win Ben Stein's money. Most of us are aware especially after watching Win Ben Stein's money that he is one smart guy and is a big supporter of the scientific world. What the movie explores is how the scientific world has decided that Darwin's theory of evolution explains everything and anyone who questions it must be nothing more than a religious zealot or an idiot. The movie shows that there are some major gaps in Darwin's theory and that there are still major questions that have gone unanswered. Where the freedom of speech issue arises is through the many professors that teach at leading institutions that have questioned evolution and started to look at what is called intelligent design. In many cases these professors with outstanding records have not only been fired but have also been black listed from other Colleges and Universities. The crazy part for me is that I assumed by definition that science was always about questioning things until there was no room for error. Darwin himself admitted before he died that he had only figured out a small portion of the answers to life's big questions and now there is proof that he has been wrong on many levels. It's really sad that while the Darwinists attack anyone that doesn't believe in evolution they themselves have almost become religious zealots themselves. There are gaps in his theory there is no denying it and yet these scientists continue to say this is the only explanation, period! All I can hope for is that things will change, Obama brings great promise to the world and I believe he is going to change a lot, can he change this level of ignorance? I think that one is up to the rest of us!
