For those of you that have been using a computer for quite some time, you probably remember the floppy disk that used to be on the front of every PC that was shipped. At first, these disc were rather large and they only contained enough memory to hold less than 1 MB of information. Eventually, these standard floppy disk that held 1.44 MB of information was introduced and it was well-received because of its large data storage capacity. Eventually, however, the need for larger media became necessary and eventually, a number of different types of data storage devices surfaced. Among these include the CD, and eventually the DVD. One single sided DVD is able to hold roughly 4.7 GB of information while a single sided double layer DVD holds about 8.5 GB. An even larger option that is now available is a double-sided, double layer DVD which holds approximately 17 GB of information. At this time, the larger DVD is somewhat rare. It's no wonder, then, that DVD stands for Digital versatile disc (although at times it is referred to as being a digital video disc). Almost all PCs are now shipped with a DVD burner as standard equipment, which gives you a number of different uses for this disc. Most people that burn DVDs do so in order to burn movies to watch on their television. It certainly is an excellent choice for this and you can easily burn a full length movie onto one of these discs, even more if you remove some of the unnecessary data. The DVD has really replaced the VHS as the method of watching home movies and most people are now converting their old VHS tapes over to DVD in anticipation of not being able to find a VHS player any longer. Another reason why you might use a DVD is in order to back up information from your computer. Because of their large capacity, it's an excellent choice to back up pictures, video and music files in order to store them in a safe location. Because the price of a blank DVDs has come down in recent years, it is a very inexpensive choice as far as this is concerned. There may also be times whenever you want to send out information to your customers and a DVD is an excellent choice, especially if it is a lot of data. Many companies will do this in house, especially if they only need to send out a few copies but if they need multiple copies, they might look for a DVD duplication service that will take care of it for them. These services typically charge by the DVD and the more that you purchase, the lower you are going to pay each. As computers continue to get larger as far as their storage capacity is concerned, additional ways of storing the data will come about as well. It will be interesting to see where technology will take us next.
