Last Friday (March 20) Jane's Addiction released two new studio tracks online via Ninja2009 online, which is the tour site for the band's upcoming co-headlining tour with Nine Inch Nails. NIN's Trent Reznor produced both "Chip Away" and "Whore," which are available for free download (true Jane's Addiction fans may recognize the songs from the band's 1987 self-titled live album.) Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell told Billboard online, "Just to get some creative juices flowing- we went into the studio for about two weeks. We had the idea to re-record two tunes, just because they'd never been done officially in the studio. And we had some fun writing some new things. A handful that are close to finished, but not quite done. But there's no rush to put anything out at this point." What there is a rush for is to get Jane's Addiction tickets before they're all gone! Although Trent Reznor and Alan Moulder were on production duty for the new songs, Farrell cautioned Jane's Addiction fans to not expect a new record just yet, telling Billboard online, "For me, the idea is to introduce one or two songs into this touring cycle along with the ones everybody knows and loves." The original four members of Jane's Addiction decided to come back together after the 2008 NME Awards and are now preparing for their summer tour in addition to the release of A Cabinet of Curiosities, a rarities box set that will arrive April 21 via Rhino. The set boasts three CDs and a DVD, featuring Soul Kiss, a documentary on the band and Farrell's film The Gift. Farrell formed the newly reunited band in the mid-'90s with bassist Eric Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Dave Navarro and, after releasing a live debut album, Jane's Addiction signed a record contract with Warner Bros. and released Nothing's Shocking in 1988. Although the album did manage to find a mainstream audience, it was 1990's Ritual do lo Habitual that proved to be Jane's Addiction's commercial breakthrough. The album went gold, but just as it seemed the band was at the brink of success, Farrell formed Lollapalooza as their farewell tour. After Jane's Addiction disbanded, Farrell formed Porno for Pyros with Perkins while Navarro formed Deconstruction with Avery (the band was short-lived and Navarro went on to play with the Red Hot Chili Peppers for a time.) Jane's Addiction did reunite briefly for a tour and live album, Kettle Whistle, in the late '90s, but then the band members went their separate ways again, much to the chagrin of fans. The second Jane's Addiction tour kicked off in 2002 and that same year Farrell, Navarro and Perkins entered the studio to work on Strays (2003), their first album of the new material in over a decade. History repeated itself when the band parted ways again in 2004 but after four years of enjoying solo success the original lineup took the stage at the first-ever NME Awards and decided to give it a try again.
