Jennifer Hudson Tickets - Super Bowl Performance Signals Jennifer Hudson's Return

By: Brent Warnken

After enduring a family tragedy this fall, Jennifer Hudson returned to the stage for the first time to perform the national anthem before the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida Feb. 1. Hudson's mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew were slain in the singer and actresses' native Chicago in October. Although Hudson has yet to speak publically about the tragic incident, her estranged brother-in-law has been charged in the killings.

Hudson wore a white top, black pants and a cropped black jacket when performing the national anthem, which is considered one of the most prestigious spots of all Super Bowl performances even since Whitney Houston's unforgettable 1991 rendition during the first Iraq war.

Faith Hill, who sang "America the Beautiful" prior to Hudson's anthem, offered up praise to the former American Idol alum for making a public appearance after enduring such a traumatic event. During an NFL news conference prior to the big day, Hill said, "She is a strong girl, a girl of faith. I believe to come and perform the national anthem, which is this country's favorite song, at a time that our country is stepping up and moving forward for future generations. I think it's just the perfect choice." The Oscar winner is expected to resume her busy work schedule after her Super Bowl performance with a spot at the Grammys February 8 and her new music video for "If This Isn't Love" is slated for release Feb. 9. Jennifer Hudson first captured the American audience during season three of American Idol, and although the Windy City native placed sixth in the contest (Fantasia Barrino took home the grand prize), her career took off from there. Prior to appearing on Idol, Hudson had starred in a local production of Big River and also sang professionally on the Disney Wonder cruise ship, but after the show garnered her recognition, Hudson scored the coveted role of Effie White in the film version of the Broadway favorite Dreamgirls. Hudson took home a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her breakthrough role and followed its success with the release of her eponymous debut album in 2008.

One single, "Spotlight," landed on the charts while the Arista-issued album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Also in 2008, Hudson explored more acting options, taking on the role of Louise, Carrie Bradshaw's hopeless romantic assistant in the Sex and the City movie and in the film adaptation of the award-winning novel The Secret Life of Bees. Despite enduring a setback in her personal life, it is clear that Jennifer Hudson has nowhere to go but up in her professional life.

Hudson garnered four Grammy nominations the 2009 awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song (for "Spotlight"), Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for her duet with Fantasia ("I'm His Only Woman") and Best R&B album.
