MySpace, the gigantic online social network, announced it has begun a political section to prepare for the 2008 U.S. presidential elections. Myspaces political site is called the Impact Channel. The NewsCorp owned site will feature links to pages for 10 presidential candidates ; 5 Democrats and 5 Republicans. According to comScore MediaMetrix,MySpace saw approximately 60 million U.S. users in the month of December and about 90 million visitors from around the world. As the election nears, presidential candidates have sought to use the power of the Internet to communicate directly with voters. Young voters who have built their own internet culture, as found amongst the young adults and teens of Myspace, have been a challenge to reach using the traditional media of mainstream media. Myspacers are provided easy ways to copy and repost candidates' flashy campaign graphics to personal MySpace pages and to become part of online money machine for different presidential campaigns. While Myspace's Impact Channel was launching with a look at the U.S. presidential election, It will grow to include global features for elections of all types as well as by non-profit organizations. The Impact Channel creates a unique communication space to bring politicians and non-profits to the site's thriving user population. Modeled after other Myspace channels such as MySpace Music and Video, this developing channel will enable the community to learn about the politicians, bring a new level of involvement of the political process to the internets daily life, and introduce movers and shakers relevant to their lives. It is a foregone conclusion that the new channel will play an important part in the upcoming campaign.
