Proxy Servers Info: How Secure Is Your Email?

By: Alex Gwen Thomson

Most people don’t need to worry about their email security. There’s just too many of us using the ‘net now—and we’re too boring. But what if you’re just paranoid and securing your email is necessary for your peace of mind? Secure proxies, anonymous remailers and other tools can help you.

First, let’s look at some email security issues:
- Is anyone watching your mail?
- How long do they store your mail after you delete them?
- Can you be traced when you send e-mail?

Is anyone watching your email? - Probably not if you use your web mail account’s secure connection (https). However if you use a public terminal or open wifi hotspot, it is quite possible for your mail to be intercepted. Not that anyone would be interested unless they know you personally, or you’re a notable person.

How long do mail servers store email? - Generally, not very long. Here’s why: Backing
up data is a burdensome, costly process. Especially if you’re a biggie like Yahoo or Gmail that hosts literally thousands of email accounts and countless tetrabytes of data. For a major company, this can mean system admins spending 8 hours a day backing up 200 tapes worth of data every day. And that’s for backing up for only the last 30-40 days. It’s impractical for ISPs and web servers to back up even deleted data for very long, without good reason.

Can you be traced by sending email? - Yes. The mail headers of the messages you send give away your ISP’s location, including country and city. If this is too much information for you already, or if you want to hide your IP address from those who know you by it, you should use a proxy server.

For email security purposes, you may use a secure, anonymous proxy server. Secure means the data is encrypted during transit. You want to do that so not even the proxy server owner will see your data. Use the “https” page of your mail account. Your proxy server must allow SSL (secure) site access for you to do this. Then when you send mail using the anonymous proxy server, the recipient won’t know your real IP address because the proxy will hide it.

Anonymous proxy servers that are reliable can give you greater email security. This is useful if you want to report criminal activity but don’t want to be identified. Or you may want to make comments on a political issue in a hostile social environment. Or you may be the victim of sexual abuse and wish to protect your privacy when you join support forums. Secure, anonymous proxies have many benefits. For nothing is more important than one’s privacy and anonymity.
