Duvets made from goose and synthetic downs are most often filled with goose down feathers, and are lightweight, but still very warm. Choosing a duvet is most determined by the fill power, defined as the number of cubic inches filled by one ounce of down. Five hundred fifty is an acceptable quality, while six hundred or higher is fine quality. Man-made fiber-fills are also available to prevent sensitive allergic reactions. When selecting a duvet, you may want to consider several factors. Fill power refers to how down clusters are measured. Large clusters loft higher and provide better insulation and breath ability. Higher fill power offers greater loft and insulation, providing maximum warmth without excess weight. Fill weight is the weight in ounces of goose down in a comforter. A typical lightweight, king-size comforter has a fill weight of approximately fifty ounces, while a heavy weight of the same size is around sixty ounces. Loft is the fluffiness of goose down comforters and pillows, which can be increased by shaking duvets or pillows in order to trap more air inside. The better the loft, the more control over sleeping temperature and comfort. Loft is not defined numerically, but can be gained by choosing products with baffled stitches and high thread counts, both of which keep more feathers and air in the bedding elements.
