The Many Lives Of The Vauxhall Astra

By: Tony Hill

The Vauxhall Astra was Britain's second best-selling car during 2005, 2006 and 2007 - and during its reign it has gone through several dramatic changes in appearance.

The Mark 1 Astra rivalled the likes of the VW Golf and the Ford Escort, it was available in a hatchback, saloon and an estate. Looking back at this car it epitomises classic 80's styling - boxy and angular.

The Mark 2 Astra shed the harsh lines for curved edges making it more aerodynamic - well for the late 80's early 90's anyway.

The Mark 3 didn't show signs of much change- it was launched in the early 90's and still resembled the previous version. The main difference with this mark was its association with safety features. Vauxhall began to use the Astra's safety features to market it to the family market - so all the main changes were internal. From here onwards the Astra became a firm favourite with the family market.

It was the mark 5 Astra which became Britain's second best-selling car. It was launched in 2004 as a 5-door hatchback and then came along the 5-door estate followed by the sporty 3-door hatchback.

The hatchback is stylish and is truly aimed at the family market with its comfortable interior and 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

The 3-door is definitely the most stylish in the Astra range and is distinctively sporty making it a popular choice for those in search of a hot-hatch.

What makes this car so appealing to the family market - other than the excellent safety rating - is firstly its practicality. Although it may not seem like it from the outside the Astra has a surprisingly roomy interior. This will give you and your family a comfortable journey with plenty of legroom. The boot is also more spacious than you may expect which is an added bonus and ideal for weekly shopping trips.

With practicality comes comfort and the interior has been clearly set out using quality materials to ensure that your journeys are comfortable and enjoyable. It doesn't cost a lot to run either, fuel costs are reasonable and it isn't even too expensive to buy in the first place.

On top of everything you would expect from a family hatchback the Astra also has a surprisingly powerful engine - definitely an added bonus!

The top of the range Astra VXR is seriously stylish and comes with sporty 18" alloy wheels, sports seats and low-profile tyres - the VXR is definitely classed as a hot-hatch, and shows that Vauxhall don't just aim the Astra to the family market!
