Three Ways To Speed Up Your HP Personal Computer

By: Christine OKelly

Even fast computers get slow over time, but that doesn't mean it's time for a new PC. A little basic maintenance keeps your computer running well and inexpensive HP memory upgrades ensures it has the capacity to run today's demanding software.

Clean Up The Disk

Hard drive space is cheap and that makes it easy to collect clutter. Short-term solutions such as emptying the Recycle Bin or clearing out browser temporary files aren't much help because these areas will just fill up again. There are better answers.

Rather than emptying the Recycle Bin, shrink it! Windows sets the Recycle Bin to be 10% of the size of your hard drive, which is just way too big. Right click on the "Recycle Bin," select "Properties" and lower it to 5% or even 1% to save space.

Sort through your downloads. If you have downloaded programs that have been installed onto your system, you can delete the original installation file. There are probably lots of other old files that you don't use anymore so get rid of them.

Look For Malware

Viruses, spyware and other harmful programs can have a significant effect on system speed. These programs sit in the background and use up system resources for no reason that is beneficial to you.

Your HP computer came with a virus scanner, but is it updated? Having a scanner is no good if it doesn't have the latest virus definitions. If you don't want to pay the annual fee the commercial products charge, there are a number of free alternatives that are just as effective.

A virus scanner doesn't catch other types of harmful programs such as spyware. You need a dedicated spyware scanner to scan your system for these kinds of system resource hogs. Again there are both commercial and free options available.

HP Memory Upgrades

Even if your system is clean you may find the system has slowed down. That is because software demands have increased even as your computer specifications have stayed the same. Today's software has higher system requirements than when you bought your HP. Memory upgrades are both inexpensive to buy and easy to install to there is little reason to wait.

You can never have too much memory in your computer. Even if you don't run demanding software, running several applications at once puts great demand on system memory. As soon as you turn on your computer there are several tasks running in the background, all using up precious memory space.

HP memory upgrades will give you immediate results and you will find almost all applications run faster and more smoothly. If you find software takes forever to load or seems to stall from time to time, usually as your hard drive works frantically, this is a clear sign that you need more computer memory (RAM).
