No one thought it possible, but U2 plans on making its upcoming globe-spanning tour its best yet. How you ask? The 360 Tour will feature a stage that Bono described to Rolling Stone as "an engineering feat that created this real physical proximity to the crowd." After the iconic rock band's last tour wrapped up in 2006, longtime show director Willie Williams presented sketches of a massive, four-legged structure that would allow U2 to play stadium shows with views to the entire audience. "The band is just sitting in the palm of the audience's hand. It really works," described Williams of the engineering marvel. U2 will begin their U.S. leg of the tour (which stops in 13 cities this fall and is followed by another stint in the States in spring 2010) September 12 at Chicago's Soldier Field in what will be their first string of stadium shows since their ill-fated PopMart tour. And while a likely assumption would be that the high-tech stage would result in high ticket prices, U2 manager Paul McGuinness told Rolling Stone the opposite: "Once the engineering had been devised, it obviously has the effect of expanding the capacity of the stadiums. And it enables us to subsidize lower-priced tickets with high-priced tickets." Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. said the band isn't worried about the economy saying, "Will we sell it out? Who knows? Will the economic situation have an impact? Probably. But that's not going to stop us." And it likely won't stop U2 fans either so check online for U2 tickets! It will take no less than 120 trucks to cart U2's expansive stage from city to city, and the band plans to take on a corporate sponsor (Blackberry) for the first time to offset costs. In addition, the environmentally outspoken band will purchase carbon offsets due to the negative environmental impact of their 360 tour. U2 has already had a chance to play live versions of a handful of songs from their latest album, No Line on the Horizon, which arrived March 3 on a string of promotional dates that included a whole week on the Late Show with David Letterman and a theater show outside of Boston on March 11. The album's second single, "Magnificent," will be made into a video while "Breathe" and "Moment of Surrender" are contenders for future singles from No Line on the Horizon. Bono appears to be just as excited for the band's upcoming tour as fans, telling Rolling Stone, "We want to play for each other as much as we went to play for the crowd this time. You just don't know how long you are going to be doing this. When we walk out onstage, the hairs on people's necks go up but what people don't know is that the hairs on our necks go up too."
