I write this exactly one day - 22 hours after President Barrack Obama was officially inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States of America. As a Canadian I feel proud of the choices my neighbor to the south has finally made. It has been a long time since I felt anything other than shock or disappointment at the decisions made and I think most Americans understand exactly why. I am too young to remember JFK and his impact, based on video footage and relatives talking so enthusiastically about the promise and hope he instilled I have to think this is similar. I have to think Mr. Obama is going to make a larger impact than even JFK did, he really is inspiring! First I would like to talk about his speech, not only was it well written this guy could be the best public speaker on the planet. I have had the great fortune of seeing (live) many great speakers and I have to say Obama ranks well above number one! While he did have a prompter it seemed as though he had memorized his speech and delivered it with such grace and charisma. There are many that thought Clinton was charismatic and he was, Obama is on another level all together. There is so much talk about the mess he has inherited and will he be able to make things better. If you listen to his speech he addresses this and calls to the people to make the real difference along with him. He is smart enough to know at the end of the day he is just a project manager and needs the help of millions of people if not the whole world. One of the most poignant comments in his speech was "To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West--know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy." He also said to the Muslim world the US wants a new way forward of mutual respect and interest. This is a complete 180 degree change from where we were with the Bush administration. He realizes terror is not only tough to fight, fighting it is better done through understanding and communication, funny that's how most relationships work. With Obama the change will not just occur in the White House the change has already started in all of us and when I say us I believe the entire planet. The US is going to take a very different approach in how they treat other countries and in return how other countries treat them. While a lot of focus has gone towards the fact the Mr. Obama has African heritage I think the great part is this will start to take a back seat. This to me is important because while this is something to celebrate given the past, he was by far the best man for the job regardless of color, he is the spokesman for the new way of thinking. The change is in all of us and how we think about the world. The economy has taught us to reduce our over consumption of material goods, this new administration will help us all realize we can be better.
