When to start using Creatine (Part 2)

By: Mick Hart

So what age should I wait until? And why? In my opinion I would say about 21. When you are a teenager, boys will have a naturally high testosterone level anyway, which is why we see growth spurts at that age in males. At that age the body is not fully matured. Bones, muscle tissue, internal organs etc are all still undergoing their natural maturity.

As a teenager the body is still at a development stage and the taking of either steroids or hormones can play havoc on the natural growth process. The negative effect would be the premature sealing of the epiphyseal bone closure process, which actually doesnt permit the body to grow to its genetic potential. Fortunately there are tests which allow you to see whether the growth plates have stopped growing or not, although 21 is normally a safe age to start.

During the development stage the antigonadotropic effects of steroids are alot more noticeable. And although we do know that hpta (hormone axis) recovers in Adults, it is unclear in Teenagers. It could lead to permanent low levels of testosterone as a result of taking exogenous sources at 15 when your hpta is yet to become fully operational. It is quite apparent that natural testosterone levels are higher at 21 than they would be at 15.

I started to train hard at 15, but although I was aware that some of my friends were already taking steroids, I decided upon the natural route to muscle growth. Just like most young trainers, I was ignorant about the taking of and effects of taking steroids. I had only come across the horror stories that come out of the press so I just carried on with natural supplements until at 18 I began listening to some of the more serious bodybuilders at the gym.

We would discuss the basics and in no time at all I was on a mission to find out more. I knew that the taking of steroids was a serious issue so with safety in mind I set out to find out more. I read a few related articles in bodybuilding mags as well as receiving advise from my father who is a Clinical Biochemist with the hope of getting an unbiased opinion.

I realised at that time that I would really be wise to wait until I was at least 21 so that I could maximise on my bone growth (if I had any left) as well as keeping myself as safe as possible. I was at the time 5'11". It was difficult, especially seeing lads my own age growing huge with what seemed like no effort. As I got older I saw younger lads juicing and growing.

Although it was a tough decision, I spent the next three years training really hard and at least 10 times more than anyone else. I was really determined to get big muscles through dedication and not by taking alternative supplements, so I just kept at it knowing that my time would come. I didn't waste anytime in research though and got some excellent advice from Mick's Layman's Guides, The Anabolic Reference Guide and the couple of books out by the late Dan Duchaine.
